Blind Harbor Apiary is located near Ogdensburg, NY - approximately two miles from where the Oswegatchie River joins the St. Lawrence River. Its name is rooted in the early history of the region when French explorers were mapping the St. Lawrence River Valley during the seventeenth century.
At the time, today’s Lighthouse Point was covered with maple and oak trees and the sand bar at the mouth of the river was a small island covered in thick bushes. This hid the Oswegatchie from the view of anyone traveling along the St. Lawrence. In fact, explorers knew that a tributary must be nearby because they noticed black water entering the main channel.
After searching the area, explorers located the mouth of the tributary that became known as “Oswegatchie” – from the Native American "Swe-kat-si" meaning "black water”. Upon entering the river, they realized that the secluded harbor provided them protection from windstorms. Because of this, the mouth of the Oswegatchie was dubbed “Blind Harbor”.
Just like the original Blind Harbor, Blind Harbor Apiary is tucked away in a secluded location just a stone's throw away from the St. Lawrence River!
